The event drew a standing-room-only crowd of about 200 entrepreneurs, developers, utility companies and officials from the White House to discuss the possibilities of Green Button and its involvement in new products and services in the energy industry.  According to Nick Sinai, the Deputy Chief Technology Officer for the Obama administration, roughly 35 utilities offer their customers a Green Button tool giving 27 million residential and business customers access to their usage data.

The event featured  panels on software, energy management, and renewables companies that are already implementing capabilities to use Green Button data, including two Genability customers, PlotWatt and Wattzon.

Keynote speaker Karen Austin, PG&E’s chief information officer, shared with the audience that the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has released a proposed decision on PG&E’s Customer Data Access application allowing the California utilities to turn Green Button Connect into a full-scale service giving utilities authority to provide third parties access to customer data when requested by the customer—the goal of “Green Button Download My Data.”

The next goal is for developers to create innovative products that make use of this valuable data.
